Careers exist for fireplace installers: National Fireplace Institute
holds regional education and certification sessions

Job opportunities await those who become certified by the National Fireplace Institute. The independent certification agency hold review courses based on industry reference manuals and proctor exams during events held throughout the country.

Overseen by the HEARTH Education Foundation, based in Arlington, Virginia, the NFI certification program is designed for those selling or installing gas, wood burning, and pellet products. This education program accurately reflects best industry practices applied every day in the field. And, with fireplaces in nearly every house in America, the hearth industry has enjoyed steady growth since Benjamin Franklin introduced his stove.

"I was surprised to hear the president of a large company that warehouses and installs fireplace equipment tell me recently that his biggest business problem is not making sales, but is finding qualified installers," says Jerry Scott, Vice President with California-based Real-Fyre Gas Logs. "The public expects hearth products be installed by certified professionals. But, there just don't seem to be enough certified service people familiar with the very specific technologies that are state-of-the-art in this business. There's tremendous opportunity."

Three NFI certifications are available, each valid for three years: NFI Certified Gas Specialist, NFI Certified Woodburning Specialist, and NFI Certified Pellet Specialist. Gas includes all gas hearth appliances and venting systems. Wood burning includes both factory-built fireplaces and all woodstoves. Pellet includeds all pellet fuel hearths and venting. Those new to the industry and its products are advised to study the manual thoroughly prior to attending any NFI review session. With recent major revisions to the material, even those familiar with, or experienced in, the installations of hearth products will be wise to do similar study of the workbook before taking the test.

"Where public safety is concerned, the more rigorous the program and testing, the better," notes NFI Executive Director Sue Kalish. She is also responsible for the extensive management and sales education programs offered by the HEARTH Education Foundation.

Upon passing the NFI exam, the NFI Certified Specialist will receive appropriate certificates, decals, patches, and be listed on a web site for both the public to find and the code and building officials to review. Building contractors are regularly in need of trained hearth pros. Fire and safety officials, and ultimately, the consumer, expect trained personnel in this field, as well.

"All our people who work directly with customers must get certified," says Dan Quick of DESA, a manufacturer of a wide variety of hearth products. "Our people meeting the NFI standards will give us a competitive advantage. In a marketplace where customers are attracted to those who distinguish themselves from the competition, NFI certification will demonstrate a concern for safety, professionalism, and competence".
